Femme Fatale - Deluxe Edition (ALTERNATIVE CURVES BLOG HOP)

March instalment of the #alternativecurves blog hop themed, Femme Fatale. Kobi Jae of Horror Kitsch Bitch in a thrifted, vintage, wiggle dress, giving you some film noir fatshion realness!

My word, it's been some time since I've blogged! As you may know from my last post, I was being interviewed for a very exciting job in graphic design - and I got it! So that now means juggling 3 jobs with full time uni... I must be off my rocker!

As well as that, my beau finally moved to Melbourne, and we've been gallivanting around making people absolutely SICK with our smoochiness and not even feeling bad about it.

AND, since i've last blogged - if we're Instagram friends, you may already know - we had Curvy Couture at Melbourne Fashion Festival in which I VERY excitedly made my runway debut. ON MY BIRTHDAY. Surrounding by so many of my incredibly beautiful fatshion sisters, my best friends, and my family from interstate. Such a lucky girl, I am!! There will be an extensive blog post to follow, when I get back from Byron Bay Bluesfest in 10 days (it's a yearly ritual - last year's post can be found here). ZOMG life is nuts right now!

As you may have guessed, the Alternative Curves blog hop theme this month is Femme Fatale, and I actually found this dress a couple of month's ago in Savers and knew straight away what I wanted it for. It's just taken all of my personal restraint to not wear it out until I could debut it here. But now - THE DRESS HAS BEEN UNLEASHED! I'm gonna SLEEP in this baby!

If you don't know much about the film noir genre, may I suggest you begin with this list - The 15 Best Noir Films of the 1940's. There are some absolute BEAUTIES on here! If you've seen any, please let me know which your favourites are. I think mine are probably 'Sorry, Wrong Number' and 'Mildred Pierce'.

Big thanks and love to Sam for snapping my photos!

Working 9 to 5 - What a Way to Make a Livin'!

Kobi Jae of Horror Kitsch Bitch - alternative plus size style - job interview outfit! Top is thrifted, skirt was acquired at a fat girl clothing swap, teamed with vintage brooch and Rubi shoes
What to (realistically) wear to a job interview has always kind of baffled me. Last August, this was one of the Aussie Curves challenge themes, but I went a bit too "extremely high powered corporate boss woman" for any dimension I actually exist in. I've never put too much thought into what I would actually wear, because i've never been for a job that required careful consideration.

Until this week!

Yesterday I went for a job that I actually REALLY, REALLY want, because it is *gasp* in the direct field of what I currently study! I am a Communication Design student, and I applied for a position as a Junior Graphic Designer for a small advertising agency. And they said nice things about my portfolio! And they invited me back, tomorrow! It must be cos I power dressed. What do you reckon?

The Importance of Being a Neo-Victorian Raver Babe (ALTERNATIVE CURVES BLOG HOP!)

Kobi Jae of Horror Kitsch Bitch, in a neo-victorian outfit for the #alternativecurves bloghop. Outfit is bordering on a plus size costume for fat babes, featuring a steel boned corset and DIY handmade bustle skirt of thrifted fabric... a blending of vintage, raver, scene, goth, club kid.
The Alternative Curves theme this month is Neo-Victorian, and boy do I love any excuse to slip into a steel-boned corset! Incidentally: so does Gomez. Chasing my laces is his favourite past time.

I used to be fairly well into them, but this is the only one I still own. It also used to be too big, but one of the joys of accidentally getting a bit fatter is that now it fits! And man, if I do say so myself, my cans look ACE!

This skirt I made a few years ago out of a thrifted doona cover, for a Fellini-themed party... guess which film I was out of? ;)

I don't really know what else to say about it all, except - after we do a spot of reading and take a turn around the garden, we will definitely be on our merry way to a warehouse rave. Objections? I thought not...

Yeah, I made it in a hurry and never went back to tidy it up >.<

Big thanks to my love, Sam - for not only taking the photos, but for letting me have free reign on post-production. Not many photographers would allow that, and I am truly blessed to have an amazing pal that I can creatively collaborate regularly with! <3

1970's Hippie Horror Babe: ALTERNATIVE CURVES BLOG HOP!

I'm not entirely sure what makes me a 1970's Hippie Horror Babe. But, well, I just wanna be - so there!

Actually, that's not entirely true. I recently watched the entire Friday the 13th franchise (again), and the first one in particular (being released in 1980) had some seriously delicious 70's girl fashion and beauty.

This month's theme on Alternative Curves is TIME TRAVEL - which is pretty darn exciting! I had grand plans of doing some sort of kooky, foil-based futuristic Jetsons meets Magenta and Riff Raff revenge scene mixup. But, well, dem Friday the 13th ladies got me feeling the seventies vibes so bad!

I've never really done a look of that era before, because I tend to think of myself as a 1960's and pre kinda girl. So! This was a real challenge, but one made significantly easier by these GORGEOUS pants I recently bought from Pho Sizzle Threads. I am NOT a pants person, but these are so beautiful, light (perfect for summer) and so so comfortable.

Anyway, this is perhaps not the most "outside the box" outfit in the grand scheme of things, but it is for me. I absolutely adored wearing this on a beautiful summer'3 afternoon, imbibing copious quantities of wine and soft cheese. And hey, any excuse for tonnes of blue eyeshadow!

Special thanks to Sam for snapping my snaps, and do check out the other creative babes in the blog hop boxes below! <3

I can't believe nearly the whole month has gotten away from me... I'm just scraping my Alternative Curves entry in! NAUGHTY KOBI!

Does anybody else feel like time is moving faster? I know i've always heard my parents and older family members say it, but i'm really starting to feel the crunch. I can't even imagine what it's going to be like in another 5/10/20 years! Shiiiiiiiiit.

Enough chat, none of us have time. Right?!

This month's theme is Leader of the Pack, and I was tempted to do a "Wolf Woman" outfit and surround myself with wolves via the magical powers of photoshop. But I refrained (sorry).

I also considered dressing like The Shangri-Las and re-enacting this video.

But then Anna asked if I wanted to be part of a Teddy Girl Gang, and I was all like HELL YEAH! I sorted through my clothes and discovered I had everything I needed - despite feeling CERTAIN I didn't own a pair of plain pants...

I first read about Teddy Girl's in this Messyness Chic post last year, and was totally transfixed. What stylin', badass bitches!! And so very nearly forgotten, were it not for the photos by Ken Russell.

My other favourite article (that includes links to lots of other articles) is this one by fellow Aussie blogger Andi B. Goode.

If you missed it, here was last months Alt Curves post, and remember to check out all the other babes below. And feel free to join us next month!

Mean, Green Nursing Machine (Aussie Curves)

Hello! My goodness, it's been a few weeks since I participated in an Aussie Curves challenge. Things have been full on! Most exciting of which, I have been asked to be a judge at Monster Fest (which, if you don't know, is Melbourne's only HORROR FILM FESTIVAL)! So for the last week and a half I've been watching all the horror, blood and gore that my strange little heart desires, and totally ignoring my friends - blog included. I think i'm about 17 films down, with another 5 - 8 to go. YEE HAW!

If you live in Melbourne and love horror, make sure you check out the program and get along to see some stuff. I'm definitely going to be heading to the all night Friday 13th movie marathon next Friday, and I can't wait! And can we just take a second to appreciate how glorious this poster is?

Today was also the open casting for runway street models for next year's Curvy Couture Roadshow. It was so damn awesome to be surrounded by so many beautiful, stylish and FUN ladies!!

As for the challenge, I had to jump back on board this week for the theme "favourite colour", because I love any excuse to wear green! It's hard to pick a favourite between green and purple, but I was definitely feeling the former that day. Sam and I were headed into the city to eat dumplings and watch a double feature of the new Hunger Games and Interstellar (yep, MORE MOVIES!), and we stumbled across this adorable little alley chock full of plants and fun doorways. Yep, that graffiti says "sex is fun"... \m/

Helloooooo boob gape!

I found this dress vintage 80's dress at Savers about two years ago, and for the last one year it's sat at the bottom of my mending pile. I recently found it and repaired it, and now i'm loving it all over again just like it's new. I like to pretend i'm a war-time nurse. Wow, that just got weird.

Two things I noticed after seeing these photos:
1. I really should invest in an iron.
2. I love these avocado earrings so hard. One of them has the seed and the other doesn't,
and the two halves fit together PERFECTLY. So, damn, satisfying.

That's all for now. I know i'm last to the blog hop party this week (as with a lot of weeks), but definitely check out the other ladies outfits and spread the love! Blogging is not a one-sided activity, it's about sharing and community! <3

Turn Around, Bright Eyes (Aussie Curves)

The Aussie Curves theme this week is "Then and Now", but I keep thinking of it as now and then, which causes to me to get Bonnie Tyler's 'Total Eclipse of the Heart' stuck in my head (because of the repeated lyrics "every now and then I get a little bit.... *insert various thing*).

So. Yes. Ahem. Excuse me.

It's funny, but I do often reflect on how my style has changed in the last couple of years, probably most since i've moved to Melbourne. I believe that's because I suddenly had access to more shops (new and thrift) and also because I felt I could finally, fully unleash my creativity and personal style in this glorious and thriving city.

But what I don't often reflect on is what came before that. Like, early teen and high school.

So I jumped into a long lost box of photos that haven't seen the light of day for, ohhh, probably about 6 years.

Firstly, I was not nearly drunk enough to deal with some of the stuff that was in there.

Secondly, it was SO DAMN DIFFICULT to find any full length photos of me in that era. There were thousands of photos, but so few of me. The most prevalent were group shots, and oh what do you know... I always just so happened to be riiiiiiiight at the back!

kobi jae horror kitsch bitch fat fatty girl tattooed plus-size bbw tattooes zombie inked dimples vintage retro kawaii alternative curves fatbabe ps pinup blog blogger aussie australian ootd chubby effyourbeautystandards tess munster model melbourne body positive positivity love
15 year old Kobi's uniform - baggy 3/4 denim shorts, stripy knee-high socks, a baggy dark t-shirt and my prized possession; a pair of Oakley sunglasses in pearl white.
I worked SO HARD to save for those bad boys.

kobi jae horror kitsch bitch fat fatty girl tattooed plus-size bbw tattooes zombie inked dimples vintage retro kawaii alternative curves fatbabe ps pinup blog blogger aussie australian ootd chubby effyourbeautystandards tess munster model melbourne body positive positivity love

So I had my hardcore tomboy years in which pants, 3/4 short and t-shirts were all I would ever be caught dead in. Seriously, I wore shorts and t-shirts to go swimming. That outfit on the right (above) with the tight(er) jeans and the blue check shirt... I remember my mum buying me those because she wanted me out of baggy clothes, and that was my only compromise. I still remember how uncomfortable it felt to be so "restricted", but I also remember getting some serious compliments from my friends. That'd never happened before!

And then I started to "develop my style" (hahahaha) by making my own circle skirts (which I would often tuck up into my undies to achieve some weird draping effect I really liked - see top left grey skirt below) and op shopping for black shirts. Seriously, I want to give me a hug right now.

kobi jae horror kitsch bitch fat fatty girl tattooed plus-size bbw tattooes zombie inked dimples vintage retro kawaii alternative curves fatbabe ps pinup blog blogger aussie australian ootd chubby effyourbeautystandards tess munster model melbourne body positive positivity love
The bottom is my year 12 formal dress that I designed based loosely on a dress Christina Ricci wore in the movie Sleepy Hollow. It was a stunning and unique Victorian bustle dress, and possibly the first time in my life that I ever felt beautiful.

I won't bore you with the story of "and then I transformed, like a caterpillar shedding it's cocoon", because I feel like I crap on about those reflections quite a fair bit.

But what I will say is that THANK GOODNESS I made it through those terrible years of self-hatred. I now see "fashion" (I use inverted commas because fashion to me is just personal style, not actual fashion fashion) as purely a means of expression, and something enjoyable that I choose to do when I want to. Which, granted, is quite a lot.

Some days I feel like getting dressed up and doing my makeup when i'm not even leaving the house. But some days I just go out in a scrubby house dress and not a skerrick of makeup. Point is, the things I put on my body no longer reflect how I feel about myself as a person, and they certainly don't contribute to or impact my feelings of self-worth.

Now, clothes are just for fun.

Release The Hounds...tooth (Aussie Curves)

The Aussie Curves theme this week is "favourite piece" and as (probably everyone is commenting) it's SO HARD TO CHOOSE FAVOURITES AMONGST MY CHILDREN! That's why I only have one cat, for goodness sake!

So, my favourite piece right at the second I was getting dressed that day is this divine Diana Dress from Bombshell Vintage. It fits me to perfection, and has the most adorable details like the belt and collar! It's right around this point I should be upfront and say that I was gifted this dress by the lovely Kate, by I am by no means obliged to say nice things about it. I'm gushing because I genuinely ADORE it, and it does, indeed, make me feel like a beautiful, bodacious bombshell.

For somebody who doesn't rate houndstooth very highly (despite owning this pair of custom-made houndstooth gladiator sandals), this dress WORKS and makes my rack look spectacular. If I do say so myself... It's also of the snuggliest, heavyweight fabric (? I am fabric name n00b)and i'm going to miss it during the summer - I think it will be too thick. But then we shall have a wonderful reunion next April, and it will be like sweet make up sex.
